All Souls’ Day is November 2, just one day after All Saints Day. This holy day celebrates all the faithful departed.
We’ve got some beautiful events planned for the Catholic Churches of Jennings County.
First there is an All Souls’ Day Mass on Saturday, Nov. 2 at 9:30 a.m. This will be a Traditional Latin Mass offered by Fr. Jerry Byrd at Our Lady of Providence Oratory in Brownstown.
There will also be a special rosary on Nov. 3 at the St. Mary’s Cemetery in North Vernon. This annual event prays for all the faithfully departed and is held after the 9:30 a.m Mass at St. Mary.
What is All Souls’ Day?
Officially known as the “Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed,” All Souls’ Day celebrates, honors, and prays for all those who have died to rest peacefully with God.
We are making it easy to get your plenary indulgence for All Souls’ Day as well. If you visit the cemetery with the rosary on Nov. 3 an indulgence, applicable only to the Souls in Purgatory, is granted to the faithful, who devoutly visit a cemetery and pray for the faithfully departed. If you can’t join us the indulgence is still granted from November 1-8.
Other Ways to Gain the Indulgence for the Poor Souls
Visiting a Church on November 2: A plenary indulgence, applicable only to the Souls in Purgatory, is granted to the faithful, who on the day dedicated to the Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed [November 2 {as well as on the Sunday preceding or following, and on All Saints’ Day}] piously visit a church. In visiting the church it is required that one Our Father and the Creed be recited.
How to Receive an Indulgence
To acquire a plenary indulgence there are three conditions: sacramental Confession, Eucharistic communion, and prayer for the intention of the Holy Father while being detached from sin. It is appropriate that the sacramental Confession and especially Holy Communion and the prayer for the Pope’s intentions take place on the same day that the indulgenced work is performed. However, if this is not possible you have 20 days to perform the the conditions.
The condition of praying for the intention of the Holy Father is fully satisfied by reciting one Our Father and one Hail Mary. A plenary indulgence can be acquired only once in the course of the day.
A Beautiful Prayer for the Poor Souls in Purgatory
Prayers for the Poor Souls in Purgatory
Lord Jesus, lovingly welcome into Your presence my deceased family, relatives and friends who have completed their journey on this earth, and have gone to their rest in the hope of rejoicing with you forever in heaven.
Source of all life and love, in Your infinite mercy, look favorably upon their goodness, and forgive any sins they may have committed, so they may enjoy for all eternity the great rewards You have promised to those who believe in You. Amen.
V. Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord.
R. And let the perpetual light shine upon them.
May the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.
V. Requiem aeternam dona eis, Domine.
R. Et lux perpetua luceat eis.
Fidelium animae, per misericordiam Dei, requiescant in pace. Amen.
