Holy Baptism is the basis of the whole Christian life, the gateway to life in the Spirit (vitae spiritualis ianua),4 and the door which gives access to the other sacraments. Through Baptism we are freed from sin and reborn as sons of God; we become members of Christ, are incorporated into the Church and made sharers in her mission: “Baptism is the sacrament of regeneration through water in the word.”5 -Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1213

Baptisms may be scheduled by calling the Parish Office at (812)346-3604. Baptisms can take place during the celebration of any of the weekend Masses, or they may take place outside of the context of Mass at another agreed upon time. A baptism may be scheduled at any time of the year, even during the Lenten Season.

Couples should approach the church PRIOR to the birth of the child to have their home visited and blessed. This allows for a meeting with the parents in their home in order that they are well prepared for the sacrament.

Godparent's

Godparents are a beautiful and valuable aid to the baptized in their Christian life. You must chose at least one godparent who is a practicing Roman Catholic, living an exemplary life, and who meets all of the following criteria:

has been baptized, confirmed and receives Holy Communion on a regular basis.
is age 16 or older (there may be exceptions to this rule with permission of the pastor)
must be living a life consistent with their own baptismal vows (at a bare minimum – attends weekly Mass and is involved in the life of the church).
Note: If they belong to a parish other than St. Ann, St. Joseph, or St. Mary’s a letter will be requested from their pastor acknowledging that they are a practicing Catholic.

While it is customary for children to have two godparents, it is not required; one does suffice. If two Godparents are chosen, however, one must be male and one female. If both godparents are Roman Catholic, they must both meet all of the above criteria. As stated above, you only need to have one “Catholic” godparent. For your second godparent, you may chose a “Christian witness,” to support your child in the ways of the faith. This “Christian witness” must be a baptized Christian (at least 16 years of age) who is an active, participating member in the church which they attend.
